We’re in unprecedented times at the minute. In fact, I’m not sure the word unprecedented has ever been said as much as it has been in the last couple of months. However, it’s been used with good reason because we’re all of us in the midst of a global pandemic. The kind of outbreak that none of us has seen before. It has brought out the best in the overwhelming majority of us, and you can’t go a day without seeing a story on the news of some kind soul doing their bit to make people’s lives easier. The team at BSL Precision Engineering – proudly a part of the Borehole Solutions Group – have been doing their own little bit to help the nation get through in these trying times. The dedicated team has been working tirelessly throughout the outbreak in their metal engineering workshop, spending their time on something a little different from usual.
What Have We Been Doing?
Although it affects other areas of the body as well, COVID-19 primarily affects the body’s respiratory system. In severe cases, this can lead to patients needing to be put on a ventilator to help them breathe. These are life-saving pieces of equipment, there are no two ways about it. There’s been a drastic increase of ventilators needed during the crisis; BSL felt they had a duty to do what they could to help.
Metal Engineering: What Have We Been Supplying?
Our specialist engineers at BSL Precision Engineering, has been predominantly manufacturing parts needed to produce these ventilators. These include:
- Aluminium dowels
- Brass hex pins
- Black acetal bellows plates
- Diaphragm pins
At first, when the outbreak was still relatively small-scale, an order for a batch of parts was put in, enough to produce five ventilators. Just one day after the delivery of those parts, another order came in, this time for enough parts to help manufacture fifty ventilators. The team has been doing this company and the whole country proud by working around the clock to fulfill their orders.
How Are We Staying Safe?
It’s one thing doing your part, but it counts for nothing if you’re contributing to the problem yourself! That’s why our metal engineering team is making such concerted efforts to mitigate any risk of transmission through the use of personal protective equipment. The crew has all been wearing Tyvek throw-away overalls, as well as face masks and latex gloves. The parts themselves are sealed in packages after having been disinfected.
Between shifts, all the machines are also thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to further protect the teams. Not only that, but the team is adhering to social distancing measures within the workplace. This is something that everybody should be taking very seriously, and we’re making sure that we are.
Our frontline key workers are doing such an incredible job of looking after the country. It’s only right that we continue to help where we can, and for as long as we can.
