The drilling industry is one which requires many things from those who work within it. As an absolute base minimum, it requires a lot of hard work. Beyond this, however, there are several additional qualities that a geotechnical drilling company needs to possess should it wish to last within the industry for any meaningful stretch of time.
We asked the team here at Borehole Solutions what they think matters most for a drilling company. The following answers were chosen pretty much universally by everyone that we asked! An honourable mention must go to ‘Northern spirit’, however, whilst not a necessity, I tapped into my own Northern roots – what can I say, I’m biased…
Teamwork And Trust
The bonds formed between our drilling crews are the kind that can only be made through countless hours on-site, carrying out job after job. When you’re working with potentially dangerous machinery, you need to know that your drilling partner(s) has your back. Over the past few years, vast improvements have been made with regards to worker safety, both in terms of regulation and machinery.
Looking at our sonic drilling rigs, for instance, the wireless control features (a hands-free operating system) greatly reduces the risk of injury on-site. Even with those advancements, however, there’s always going to be that element of risk when working with heavy machinery. It’s crucial, therefore, that you can rely on your team to look out for you, and help you should things ever go wrong.
A Smile At The Ready
A smile never hurt anybody, and in an industry where relationships matter as much as they do, it actively helps to be a pleasant company to do business with. The better the relationships you can foster with other contractors and clients, the more likely you are to get repeat business.
In theory, when people are paying for drilling services, they’re paying for the service. In reality, though, they’re paying for the drilling and a friendly service. It’s an intangible quality, that adds very tangible value to your geotechnical drilling company.
Admittedly, every company has to start somewhere, but the sooner you can rack up that experience, whatever drilling service that may be – whether it be CPT (and other sample testing), cable percussion drilling, sonic drilling or anything else – the better. This isn’t a job you can learn studying from textbooks, it’s one which has to be learnt out there, on the field, by getting your hands dirty.
As with anything, the more experienced you’re able to accrue, the better the service you’ll provide and the more reliable you’ll become. Experience breeds confidence, not just from the client’s perspective, but from your own as well. The more projects you undertake, the more confident you’ll feel in your own abilities.
This is as much a motto for life as it is a drilling company, but if you can’t have a laugh whilst you’re on-site, then work becomes a chore, and that’s something it should never be. When you become disengaged with what you do, you become more complacent, you switch off a bit more, perhaps, and that’s when mistakes happen.
Mistakes that can result in both a botched job, or equally as badly, personal injury. In our profession, we’re lucky in that no two jobs are the same, but even then, it’s that banter between the team that keeps us both honest, and on it. That’s not to say we don’t take our work seriously, but you can do so whilst still making a good time of it.
Flexibility And Lateral Thinking
Things go wrong. Unfortunately, that’s just a fact of life, and no geotechnical drilling company is exempt from this. It’s essential, therefore, that a company such as ours is able to think on its feet and adapt to whatever’s thrown at it.
Ours is an industry influenced by many different variables, beholden as much to the weather as we are to our client’s requests. We need to find ways to deliver our drilling solutions come rain or shine and apply some ‘outside of the box’ thinking, where necessary. This is especially important when you’re working on restricted access drilling jobs or within ‘awkward’ spaces, the sort which requires a bit of ingenuity to overcome.
There’s no one-size-fits-all model for drilling companies, but we think we’ve struck a pretty good formula here at Borehole. So, if you’d like to find out more about our geotechnical drilling company, then get in touch! Contact Borehole Solutions today on 01733 200 501
