Top Reasons To Get A Ground Source Heat Pump, This Winter

by | Nov 30, 2020

As the evenings grow longer, temperatures creep downwards and we hunker down for the winter, it might be time to consider whether you’re heating your home in the best way possible. Many of us, when we move into our homes, simply accept the current heating situation and carry on with it, regardless of whether it’s the best option for you. The reality, however, is that if you look at the alternatives, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself wanting to change. The team here at Borehole Solutions Ltd, a Peterborough-based geotechnical firm offering heat pump installation, wanted to detail why having a ground source heat pump(GSHP) installed might just be the perfect option for you, this winter.

Why Install A GSHP?

So, why exactly should you install a ground source heat pump?

Lower Carbon Emissions

GSHPs are one of the best forms of renewable energy out there. Producing either minimal carbon emissions or none at all (depending on what’s used to power the pump itself), GSHPs are much more environmentally friendly than traditional heating counterparts, which rely on burning fossil fuels.

Don’t Take Up Space

Space comes in at a premium these days, and so you want to squeeze out every last bit of room in your home – having it taken up by a boiler is, in our view, a waste of perfectly usable square footage! Because they’re located underground, these pumps are out of sight and out of mind. Why not use that newly saved space to create a little quiet room away from the kids? And relax

Planning For The Future

A good GSHP (and we emphasise it has to be well-installed, which is why we’re so keen to encourage you to use trusted, experienced contractors) can actually improve your home’s overall value. So, if you’re thinking your current home might not be your forever home, then a GSHP is a good place to look.

How Much Do GSHPs Cost To Install?

So, it’s probably worth getting this question out of the way first, because although at first glance they might seem more expensive than other traditional heating methods, the annual cost savings you’ll make more than make up for it. Installing a GSHP can cost anything from

£10,000-£30,000. Before you sharply intake any breath, however, remember that these systems will save you a lot of money every year. If you have an old LPG boiler, for instance, and you replace it with a ground source heat pump, then you would expect to save upwards of £1,400 per year – a huge saving! So, over the course of its lifetime, they more than prove their worth.

A Nice Extra Christmas Present

If you’re still a bit put off by the price tag, then there’s another little incentive that Ofgemwill throw your way to sweeten the deal. The energy regulator brought out its Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) back in 2009, offering money over the seven years following a pump’s installation. It looks like Christmas came early, this year!
