Geotechnical Drilling Health and Safety

by | Aug 2, 2022

At Borehole Solutions, geotechnical drilling health and safety for our team is our top priority. We work with geotechnical drilling machines that weigh in excess of 200 kg, meaning you can’t afford not to take it seriously. There is a considerable level of danger when working around a borehole drilling site, including the potentially hazardous materials as well as the loud noise from the heavy machinery. As a consequence, we supply all of our engineers and drillers with personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure their safety whilst working on the job.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Over the years, we have worked on sites across the nation – from construction sites to highways to cliffsides, and everything in-between. Each individual project has different geotechnical drilling health and safety requirements, although most of the PPE that we use remains consistent.

No matter the location, hard hats are a must as there is always a risk of falling materials. Likewise, the drilling process involves moving parts, which can potentially hit the team. In addition, as you can imagine, dust can be a big problem on construction sites, so we use safety glasses to help protect their eyes from hazardous materials.

Our team also use ear defenders to protect their hearing from loud machines. We also wear safety footwear with steel toe caps, safety gloves for operating the machinery and handling materials, as well as high-visibility clothing so our staff are easily visible whilst working on the site.

The above are all standard health and safety equipment that you’d expect to be used on construction sites, but we have used specialist gear for our geotechnical projects, including protective suits and harnesses!

Safety Training and Qualifications

PPE is just the start! Whilst protective equipment is important on construction sites, it is more important that everybody knows how to act to ensure their own and others’ safety. Therefore, our engineers and drillers undergo training and hold a range of qualifications under their belts, including:

  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
  • Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS)
  • British Drilling Association (BDA) Audit Cards
  • First Aid
  • Fitness Tests
